Kosovo joins the club of european free nations. My views.

Since I was born, in 1979, the following new states have appeared in the map of Europe.

From Czecoslovaquia:

Czech republic
Slovakia

From the USSR:

Estonia
Letonia
Lituania
Belarus
Ukrania
Moldova
Azerbaijan
Georgia
Armenia

From Yugoslavia:

Slovenia
Croatia
Bosnia
Macedonia
Montenegro

and finally today Kosovo has split from the last remain of the "Great Serbia"

Only one country has decided to join another country, the RDA joined the RFA creating what today we know as "Germany".

No one of this 19 nations is located in western Europe, no one of them was already included into the European Union at the time of his birth.

So as there's no model for us Catalonia will have to continue to walk in its own way, very few catalans could understand our parliament takes a similar decission without a referendum or without assuring to keep our current level of prosperity, in any case the independence would have to lead to better (and inmediatal) economocial prosperity, not less.

What cannot be understood is the reasons for which the main political parties in Spain do not want to recognize the independence of Kosovo. Do they fear to loose support as the elections approach? Why do the UK would support the cause and not Spain?

Jordi,
I remember Vicent Partal words in 1991, he is the director of Vilaweb and a good Valencian journalist. When the split of the Soviet Union, and at a time when many regimes around the world were changing fast, he said: Albania is no longer Albania, the USSR is no longer the USSR, Poland is no longer Poland, but Spain is still Spain. And that's it, Spain will never change, and will never accept diversity. As Ortega Gasset wrote down in the 1950s: Spain is something created by Castillia and only Castillian minds can accept the empire desire of the state.
So happy must we be today with the freedom of a new contry, and we should keep fighting for getting our own independence as soon as possible. the Catalan countries must be free, no longer Spain or France.
Long live the Republic of Kosova!

I believe Kosovo shouldn't be seen like a reference by catalan independentists like us. Just have a look at his history, full of crimes against serbs (and also against albanese, of course), who were the most part of kosovo's population till the XX century...

First of all,
thank you to write in English even if we all could write comments in catalan and perfectly understanding what we are saying.

But doing so we would break what this blog pretends to do. To open catalan debate out of our frontiers.

I share the same optimism than you on Kosova's independence Emigdi, but I will be even happier the day we will see a nation in developped western Europe achieving independence like Scotland of Flandes to mention the two with more probabilities. This day the path will have started to be marked.

No need to say I would be even happier if the nation that achieves full independence is Catalonia...

Since we're writing in English .... the main difficulty I see with Scotland's aim for independence is that the Labour Party (G.Brown) has about 40 (I haven't checked the numbers) MPs from Scotland, whereas the Conservatives have NONE!! So, the Labour Party (also the largest pary in Scotland itself) will never be in favour of independence as it would mean them losing power , for a longgggg time, in the UK parliament!
I believe for this reason the Labour Party has "given" the autonomous parliament and huge state aid to Scotland as well as freedom to make much more socially-acceptable laws, over the last 10 years. I suppose the idea is to "keep them happy" and they won't want to leave.
