Estudiar chino en España, a día de hoy, a finales de 2011, no es tarea fácil. Y no lo es a pesar de toda la información que nos llega por los medios de comunicación que nos habla y nos insiste sobre la importancia cada vez más creciente del gigante asiático, tanto en términos demográficos y culturales como especialmente en términos económicos y comerciales.

Cuando alguien se plantea estudiar chino tiene que tener en cuenta dos dificultades que se va a encontrar y que no se plantean al momento de estudiar otros idiomas occidentales como el inglés, el alemán o incluso el ruso.

Por una parte el chino es un idioma tonal, eso quiere decir que "wú" no se pronuncia igual que "wù" y puede tener un significado completamente diferente. Dominar los tonos es pues clave para empezar a controlar el idioma chino como también lo es saber que en el pinyin (así se llama la transcripción fonética del chino a carácteres latinos) no todas las vocales y consonantes suenan igual que en castellano, a modo de ejemplo, una "c" se pronuncia "ts". Quién quiera "fliparlo" con eso de los tonos y la fonética puede echar un vistazo a este interesante vídeo del Youtube.

En segundo lugar están los carácteres. No basta con saber decir y diferenciar "rén" de "rèn" y saber que esta palabra significa "hombre" o "humanidad". Eso no es hablar chino, hay que saber que "ren" se escribe así 人. Y con el ordenador es muy fácil si se tienen los carácteres instalados pero con el boli es muy importante dibujar bién los trazos, que deben ir de izquierda a derecha y de arriba a abajo.

Todo esto para decir que cuando intenté estudiar chino a distancia a través de la UOC para mí resultó en un absoluto desastre y no me dí cuenta de ello hasta la primera prueba de avaluación contínua. Tal vez para algunos les resulta pero para mí, enviar mis grabaciones de tonos y fonética, peleandome antes con el sistema de gabación de MP3 y esperar un día para ver qué le parecía al profesor resultó muy desmotivante. Más desmotivante fué cuando, después de haber estado mucho tiempo dedicándole al estudio de los carácteres llegó el día de la prueba y me quedé en blanco ante el papel.

Por eso decidí buscar unas clases presenciales y aquí es donde empieza la aventura y el segundo problema.

Según este artículo de El Mundo publicado el año 2009 la demanda de chino está creciendo en España, cada uno tiene sus motivos, los mios son una mezcla de hobby, interés por viajar de forma independiente algún día a China y mejora de las perspectivas laborales en un futuro a medio y largo plazo, por lo que estaría entre "el montón" en cuanto a motivación. El artículo dice que el principal handicap ante esta demanda creciente es poca disponibilidad de profesores que dominen bién el español. Efectivamente, pretender que "el chino de la tienda de la esquina" os dé clases rápidas de chino mandarín es muy arriesgado.

Por ese motivo, en el caso de Catalunya, la única EOI que ofrece chino es la de Drassanes en Barcelona, ninguna otra. En Tarragona también ofrece chino el "Servei lingüístic de la URV". Pero tanto en un caso como en el otro hay un pequeño inconveniente para quien tiene que desplazarse hasta alguna de esas dos ciudades, se ofrecen horarios partidos, o sea, dos días a la semana.

Buscando un sello de garantía me interesé por los Instituto Confucio, el equivalente del Cervantes para lengua y cultura española, el Llull para la catalana o el Goethe para la alemana por citar algunos ejemplos. También me interesaba la programación cultural de estos centros y la posibilidad que te abren de obtener becas para ir a estudiar chino en China si eres estudiante de uno de esos centros.

El Instituto Confucio se fundó en el año 2004 y en muy poco tiempo se han extendido de forma muy rápida por todo el mundo, aquí tenéis una relación de los principales centros, como se puede observar, es en Japón, Corea del Sur y Estados Unidos donde hay más centros. También se puede observar que los Confucio abren centros de enseñanza siempre en colaboración con un centro universitario local la cual cosa ha generado no pocas polémicas en países como Estados Unidos y Australia donde se ve con sospecha la relación entre el Confucio y el Partido Comunista Chino.

En España existen 4 centros Confucio, Granada, Valencia, Madrid y Barcelona. Los dos primeros están asociados con universidades locales (Ugr y UV) y los dos segundos con Casa Asia. En principio por proximidad geográfica y afinidad social debería haberme matriculado en el de Barcelona, pero me he matriculado al de Valencia, ciudad que dista a 190 km de mi residencia habitual, 10km más lejos que Barcelona. ¿Por qué?.

Sorprendentmente parece como si el plan de estudios, los horarios y el precio de las matrículas sean diferentes de un centro a otro. Vamos a echar un vistazo al tema.

En Granada el curso semestral de 60 horas cuesta 360horas, o sea, a 6 EUR la hora.

En Valencia el curso semestral de 40 horas cuesta 195 EUR, o sea, a 4,88 EUR la hora

En Madrid el curso semestral de 54 horas cuesta 370 EUR, o sea, a 6,85 EUR la hora

Finalmente en Barcelona no hay posibilidad de pagar por semestres, hay que pagar el curso entero por un año, lo cual puede resultar un inconveniente, un total de 144 horas por 840 EUR, o sea, a 5,83 EUR la hora.

Como se puede observar hay pues una disparidad significativa entre los 4 centros Confucio debido seguramente a la financiación que reciben de parte de cada uno de los "partners" en cada una de las ciudades. Destaca, y mucho, la disparidad entre el precio de Barcelona y el de Madrid ya que el socio "local" es a priori el mismo. Puede que en el precio también influya la financiación que desde China se les da a los centros, o la programación cultural asociada, pero mucho me temo que junto a la disparidad de precios también hay diferentes motivaciones de los diferentes gobiernos autonómicos por promover con más o menor intensidad la enseñanza del chino. Valencia destacó en su día por introducir la enseñanza del chino en el sistema de educación secundaria obligatoria y parece pues que está abriendo el camino. Seguiré tratando este tema cuando tenga más elementos de criterio.

The Ebro Delta, in a windy summer day

I love windy summer days in Terres de l'Ebre. While in autumn or wintertime the wind can be bitter and uncomfortable, in summer, the "mistral" wind clears up the ambience, the sky becomes bluer and the landscape colours are brighter.

One of the best places in southern Catalonia to take advantage of a lovely windy summer day is the Ebro Delta.

Head towards one of the many wild beaches in the area, the Trabucador for instance, and you'll see the green rice fields waving like in the landscapes located in other latitudes.

Once in the beach you may find plenty of kitesurfers enjoying the mixture of wind and sea.

Then, look at the Alfacs bay. The water might not be so clean and quiet as usual but the sun will be reflecting its whole power on the waters creating a palette of many colours.

Finally, head to the "Mar oberta" (Open Mediterranean Sea) for a refreshing bath under the waves.

When coming back from the beach, have a last look at the rice fields if it's sunset time and you might ask to yourself if you have come before by the same way as the colours will be so different related to 2 o3 hours before. Do not forget to open your eyes and pay attention to the sky while crossing the Delta as you may spot some wonderful rose flamingos flying from lagoon to lagoon.

Hommage to Cristòfor Despuig

Today, the bloggers in Tortosa and Terres de l'Ebre area (southern Catalonia) are celebrating the 500th anniversary of the birth of Cristòfor Despuig in the framework of the XV Renaixement festival in Tortosa.
Cristòfor Despuig was an humanist of the city in Tortosa. As a man of his time, he carried on several tasks, one of the most prominent was being a teacher of who would be, years later, king Charles V of Spain and Emperor Charles I of Germany.
But what's really important about Cristòfor Despuig is that, being a humanist in Catalonia of the XVIth century, while all the culture was becoming more and more spanishized, due to the balance of power in Spain towards the center and south of the Iberian Peninsula as a result, in part, of the discovery of the Americas, he was one of the few scholars who decided to write in catalan language. And he argued the reasons why he did so in the next paragraph of the "Colloquis de l'insigne ciutat de Tortosa" (Conversations on the illustrious city of Tortosa)

El encaje constitucional de las veguerías catalanas

El gobierno de la Generalitat de Catalunya ha presentado esta semana el proyecto de ley para configurar el territorio de Catalunya en veguerías, superando el esquema de las 4 provincias actuales por siete veguerías, de forma similar como estaba configurada Catalunya antes de los decretos de Nueva Planta del siglo XVIII, para las siguientes finalidades:

-Cooperación intermunicipal sustituyendo así a las diputaciones provinciales.
-Descentralización de los servicios de la Generalitat en el territorio.

De esa forma se dará voz a 3 territorios concretos, que por personalidad cultural propia, abandono institucional o lejanía de los centros de poder, el sistema provincial de Catalunya impuesto por Madrid en el año 1833 y corroborado por el franquismo en 1939 había relegado a un segundo plano, las Terres de l'Ebre (desde donde escribo), el Alt Pirineu i Aran y la Catalunya Central. Ese debate es intenso en Catalunya, sobretodo en las 3 zonas indicadas, pues en Catalunya a diferencia del País Vasco o Navarra, donde los segmentos más nacionalistas de la sociedad tienen una fuerte identificación con sus provincias forales (normal, son la fuente de los fueros!) aquí la división territorial se hizo con la intención de desnaturalizar el territorio y la historia...nos faltaba tener un movimiento carlista más fuerte por lo que parece..... El caso es que basta leer la historia para ver que hasta el siglo XIX Tortosa era una ciudad más grande y con más peso socioeconómico que Tarragona.

Son muchas las voces que se han alzado desde dentro de Catalunya, tanto desde el ámbito local, por parte de alcaldes celosos de que su ciudad pierda peso (Como es el caso de Lleida) como desde los partidos de la oposición, CiU porqué no quiso o no pudo hacerlo cuando estuvo en el gobierno, el PP porqué...bueno, ya sabemos cual es la línea política tradicional del PP en todo lo referente a avanzar en el plano del autogobierno de Catalunya.....

No entraré sobre el tema de los alcaldes.

En el caso de la oposición tanto CiU como el PP dan un argumento similar conjunto, aduciendo que ahora "no es el momento" debido a que las prioridades en materia política son otra.

Y yo respondería: ¿Y cuando será el momento? ¿Cuando vuelva a gobernar el PP en Madrid tal vez? ¿Cuando hayamos superado el contexto de crisis que, según las previsiones más optimistas, durará aun unos 5 o 6 años?

No quiero entrar, en este artículo, sobre este debate en profundidad, pues es tarea principal de los políticos de Catalunya demostrar que las veguerías no suponen incremento de gasto alguno sino una optimización de los recursos. Tampoco quiero entrar en el debate sobre lo que puede pasar si el Tribunal Constitucional tumba los artículos del Estatut de Miravet referentes a las veguerías, a saber, el 90 y 91 ya que esto se enmarca en el debate general sobre el Estatut en sí.

Lo que si quisiera comentar es, visto el segundo argumento que esgrime el PP, el débil encaje constitucional de las veguerías, como esto no es cierto en absoluto, por lo menos desde una óptica de lectura progresiva (no necesariamente progresista) de la Constitución española de 1978.

Y es que para mí uno de los aspectos más interesantes del paso que se dió el pasado martes al presentar el proyecto de ley es que el debate sobre las veguerías de Catalunya llega a Madrid. En el actual marco político-institucional dificilmente vamos a realizar una minirevolución sin que la "veguerización" de Catalunya se discuta en Madrid. Y eso está bién porqué en Madrid se pronunciará a menudo, si todo va como previsto, el concepto "Terres de l'Ebre". Y como dijo ahora mismo no sé quién, en este mundo actual de marcas, conceptos e imágenes es genial que hablen de uno a menudo, aunque sea para mal. O sea que, Sr. Losantos y sus amigos, ya saben "Terres del Ebro es el demonio uuuuuhhh", venga, anímese hombre!!

Bién, voy al grano, en los próximos días está previsto que el Conseller Ausás se reúna con el Ministro Chávez para presentarle el proyecto. Durante los días previos y posteriores se escribirá a menudo desde Madrid en castellano, sobre las veguerías, y seguramente se escribirá para mal y para un público madrileño.

En respuesta se escribirá desde Barcelona, para bien, para mal o para "ni de una forma ni de la otra", pero seguramente la mayor parte de las veces en catalán y para un público catalán

Para darle el toque picante y diferente yo voy a escribir desde Tortosa, en castellano, para bién y para todo aquel público que quiera leerse de cabo a rabo la parrafada que estoy escribiendo. Y es que cada uno pasa el sábado por la tarde como mejor puede dentro de la medida de sus posibilidades. Todo eso dejando en claro por anticipado que no soy experto en derecho constitucional ni en derecho administrativo local ni lo pretendo ser.

Sigo dando la chapa. Uno de los mayores "pecados" de la constitución española del 78 és que es un "tocho" de 169 artículos, 9 disposiciones transitorias, una disposición derogatoria y otra de final que casi nadie se ha leído y además mi generación, la que nació entre 1975 y 1985, no tuvo que estudiar o aprender ni en la escuela ni en la educación secundaria.

Comparen eso con la constitución de Estados Unidos, 7 artículos que la mayor parte de los norteamericanos se sabe al dedillo y a los que se han puesto enmiendas desde hace dos siglos cados dos por tres sin que nadie eche el grito en el cielo.

Eso permite que en España cada vez que un partido político, normalmente el que está en la oposición, quiera echar los trastos sobre el otro eche mano a la constitución y si me apuras el caso acabe en las manos de los jueces del Tribunal Constitucional, órgano que en demasiadas ocasiones actúa más como regulador de cuestiones altamente politizadas en lugar de ser intérprete máximo de la Constitución.

Pero hablemos de provincias. Hay un artículo, el 141.2 que dice que el gobierno de las provincias estará encomendada a diputaciones u otras Corporaciones de carácter representativo.

Traduciendo, que las diputaciones se pueden barrer si se pone en su lugar otro ente supramunicipal llámese veguería, cabildo, consell insular o agrupación libre y suprema de municipios.

Pero es el artículo 141.1 el que manda más. Establece que la provincia es una entidad local con personalidad jurídica propia a partir de la agrupación de municipios y división territorial para el cumplimiento de las actividades del Estado.

El conseller Ausàs y el president Montilla dejaron claro que las 4 provincias seguirían sirviendo como circunscripciones electorales y como división territorial para el cumplimiento de las actividades del Estado. O sea, que los de Tortosa tendremos que seguir peregrinando a Tarragona para temas relativos a Tráfico, por ejemplo.

Es más problemática la primera parte de la frase, la provincia como la agrupación de municipios. Ahí es donde estará el mayor debate. Pero a mi entender si cambiamos la diputación por otra(s) agrupación(es) de municipios donde están representados todos los de la provincia entonces aquí no hay ningún tipo de inconstitucionalidad, por mucho que lo diga Soraya y por muy Sáez de Santamaría que sea.

Más complicado será lo del Alt Pirineu y lo de la Catalunya Central pues habrá que tocar los límites provinciales de Lleida, Girona y Barcelona, pero oigan, en ningún punto de la constitución se dice cuantas provincias hay ni que sus límites son intocables, basta una ley orgánica (mayoría absoluta) y punto. Pero claro, para eso mejor que el PP tenga el mínimo posible de diputados en Madrid.

En conclusión, creo que tarde o temprano, en un escenario de Catalunya formando parte de España, tendremos que, o crear 7 provincias españolas en Catalunya o, a mí entender lo mejor, una província única con sede en Barcelona. Las únicas desventajas de eso sería que los 4 servicios descentralizados del Estado en el territorio como Tráfico o el ejército caerían más lejos, dejo al criterio de cada uno decidir si eso debe estar cerca de la casa de uno o no. Pero de igual forma que la Seguridad Social, dependiente de Madrid, tiene oficinas en Tortosa, igualmente podría tener oficina Tráfico por todo el territorio catalán.

La otra desventaja de una provincia única es que habría una única circunscripción electoral, eso supone menos diputados en Madrid con identificación territorial pero más pluralidad, por efecto de la Ley d'Hondt los partidos pequeños tendrían más posibilidades de tener representación por Catalunya. Pero aquí ya estoy entrando en otro debate. Resumiendo, las veguerías son constitucionales y el ejercicio de la política supone tomar decisiones valientes como esta, por muchas críticas que genere no se debe parar el proyecto sino nunca se llevará a cabo.

Templar knights and its legacy in Terres de l'Ebre

Among the Terres de l'Ebre best kept secrets there's, I have absolutely no doubt about it, the legacy the templar knights left in this land of the lower river Ebro bassin.

Last thursday 10th of december the writer Jesús Avila Granados presented in Tortosa parador castle of "La Suda", the outcome of his devouted journeys in Terres de l'Ebre materialized in a book "Templers a les Terres de l'Ebre".

Mr. Avila is proud to reflect in his book what many other people had already been working and promoting so far, like Mr. Aurelio Monge from its shop "Lo racó del temple" in Miravet, the fact that here in Terres de l'Ebre there's the second biggest templar footstep in the world afther Central Portugal.

And these are good news, specially in our days, as everything concerning the templars and its misterious legacy to the Western culture is so fashionable. Books like Dan's Brown "Da Vinci Code", films like "Kingdom of heaven" or blockbuster videogames as "Assassin's Creed" series promote the Templars and the misteries related to them to the mass culture.

The Templars a military order of warrior-monks whose headquarters where located in the current Temple Mount, Jerusalem, where the Second Jewish Temple was formerly located, are supposed to have carried with them a secret of great value when they were expelled from the holy land by Saladin's muslims, departing from the syrian port city of, what a surprise, Tartaus (also known as Tortosa).

This secret is considered to be, by mainstream scholars, as the Holy Grail, the sacred cup where Jesuchrist drank during the last supper, but it could also be, the Ark of the Covenant, one of the most venerated object (if not the first one) for the Jewish People where the tablets of stone with the ten commandments delivered to Moses by God are stored. The Ark of the Covenant was located in Roman Times in the Second Temple, where the Templar Knights had they headquarters 10 centuries later and now there's the Al Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, in the place where God stopped Abraham's hand just in the moment where he was going to kill his son.

With the catalan "reconquista" the count of barcelona and king of Aragon delivered many lands in the new conquered lands to the Templar Knights. And it seems that they really appreciated this place which is now called "Terres de l'Ebre".

Because the weather, the waters of the Ebro river, the rich landscape drawn with a rich irrigation system left by the arabians, and, most important, the existence of three different cultures among the local population, the muslim, jewish and christians, allowed the Templars Knights to play a central role as social judges respected by all the communities.

Currently their footstep can be see mainly in Miravet, but also in Horta de Sant Joan, Tortosa (the Suda castle itself) and Campredó.

Jota, the song that travels up and down the Ebro river

Legend says that 1000 years ago, when most of the Iberian Peninsula was under muslim arabic rule, there was a singer and poet in the city of Valencia, by these days "Balansiya", called Ibn Jot. He used to sing very fresh and popular songs. He became so famous among the people of Valencia that the other singers and artist became jealous of him so they decided to claim to the religious authorities that the letter of what he was singing was among Islam and the Koran.

Ibn Jot was expelled from Balansiya and decided to go further north. While travelling northwards he kept singing his melodic songs in all the souks and medinas he visited. Lately he arrived to the Ebro river bassin, to the city currently know as Tortosa, by that days "Turtuxa", also under islamic rule.

We cannot know if his songs were revolutionary or not as his detractors argued, what we certainly know is that his musical style, the "Jota" (From his name Ibn Jot) is now very popular in...what a surprise! all the Ebro valley, from Tortosa up to Cantabria through Aragon, south Navarre, Rioja and Burgos province.

Maybe Ibn Jot fell in love with the Ebro River and the landscape created by this river with its merchant ships carrying goods from distant lands and fishermen catching all kind of fish in its blue water.

What is true is that know, in 2009, the only place in Catalonia where Jota is still sung and danced is in Terres de l'Ebre, the area south of Catalonia around the city of Tortosa. These pictures, taken last weekend in the small town on Paüls, give proof of it.

Le Puy-en-Velay et Avignon, les jumelles de Tortosa

Je suis parti pendant ces vacances de Pâques à les villes jumelles françaises de Tortosa, Le-Puy-en-Velay (Auvergne) et Avignon (PACA).

J'y suis allé avec un vieil connu de la ville de Le-Puy, Mr.Oriol Gracià, qui a vécu un an là-bas et donc il avait beacoup de connaissances bien gentilles comme Romuald le prof qui aime la photografie, Marie, qui a un fort caractère car elle travaille avec des enfants autistes et en plus elle a supporté 3 mecs dans son appart pendant 4 nuits, Marie Louise, qui a montré une grande gentillese en pretant son appart sans nous connaitre du tout et sans y etre présente, Helène, la vraie princesse de Polignac, Patricia, l'écrivante charmante au visage à l'Amélie Poulain et la franco-ukrainienne Helena qui est la vraie vedette de la ville entière.
Mais nous ne sommes pas partis tous seuls de la Catalogne moi et Oriol car il y avait aussi un autre mec, César, et deux filles, qui faisaient au même temps une jolie representation de la beauté de la femme catalane, Cinta et Sònia.

Sans tous eux, le voyage n'aurait pas été le même, je vous assure.

Ça m'a etonné de voir comme, dans un pays à priori homogène, surtout si on se met à comparer la France avec l'Espagne, ces deux villes presentent un caractère fortament different l'une de l'autre.
Ainsi, par exemple, la ville de Le Puy se trouve bien eloigné de toute voie rapide, au moins si on y vient du sud comme c'était notre cas. Il y a au moins 90 minutes de conduite des les autoroutes qui traversent la France du Nord au Sud. Et pourtant la ville est bien vivante, il y a plein de commerces ouverts en centre ville et un marché très interessant le samedi matin qui cohabite avec un centre commerciale en banlieu "à l'americaine".
Apparentment il n'y pas aucune autre activité economique que le commerce et l'agriculture mais ça ce n'est pas une raison pour que les jeunes partent ailleurs. Malgré qu'ils le font, Lyon est seulement à 130 km, ils restent volontiers en ville, histoire de voir des qu'on arrive d'une ville comme Tortosa.
Pour ce qui concerne le tourisme tout est placé autour du début d'une des branches du Chemin Saint Jacques et de la promotion de sa dentelle et la lentille verte. Un vrai succès de tourisme identitaire qui n'est pas agressive avec l'entourage.

Mais des qu'on bouge à Avignon tout a changé, la ville est beaucoup plus peuplé et ici on est dans la vraie France metropolitaine, c'est-à-dire, il y a des gens de tous couleurs et de tout origine geografique, chose que n'est pas si evidente de voir sur Le-Puy-en-Velay, beaucoup plus "gaulois" ou "occitain", à vous de determiner.
J'ai bien aimé voir le soleil de nouveau auprès trois jours en Haute Loire et j'ai aussi aimé voir le palais des Papes et la Roine. Il faut bien voir la ville cet anné si vous ne la connaissez pas car on y fête le 700 anniversaire de la proclamation du premier Pape d'Avignon.

On espère d'y aller de nouveau à Le-Puy lors de la fête du Roi de l'Oiseau le mois de septembre et à Avignon à propos de la Grande Fête qui finira avec la celebration du 700 anniversaire en octobre. Faudra préparer des habillements medievales et de la Renaissance!!

Cépendant on espère voir aussi des ponnotes et des avignonais à les Terres de l'Ebre!!!

First hanami in Terres de l'Ebre

Terres de l'Ebre, the catalan regional subdivision located roughly 200 km south of Barcelona, will celebrate next sunday 29th of march from 16h to 18,30h its first hanami in the area near the village of Paüls.

Weather permitting, of course. But apparently there's nothing to fear so far.

A hanami is the festival held in all the public parks of Japan in the first spring days. In consist in sitting down the cherry blossoms (Sakura) to contemplete the beauty of the flowers while drinking sake and green tea with family and friends.

Japanese people has been celebrating hanamis for the last 1000 years, it helped to remember them that life is short and they must enjoy the beauty of this world as soon they will have to die, specially if they were samurai and knew that had to engage into battle.

Terres de l'Ebre produces, mainly in Miravet and Paüls, around 50% of all the catalan cherries, that means that we have quite a few cherry trees, don't you think so?

The problem is that, unlike japanese, our trees are not located in public parks but mainly in private properties.

Some of the member of the Terres de l'Ebre blog writers, pushed by our past proved dinamism, had the idea to try to organize a similar event in our homeland, just to see what happens.

So we have got in contact with the owner of one of Paüls cherry trees fields, who is at the same time the owner of a small rural hotel called "La Remulla" and she allows us to celebrate the first hanami in southern Catalonia for free.

In Vall de Baiges, near Paüls, 5,2 km from the right turn before Paüls village indicating "Vall de vinyes", just keep in your left all the time for 10 minutes or so. The spot is where you will find some big rocks fallen from the mountain in your left.

Bring some big pieces of plastic like rubish bags (clean and empty of course) or beach towels to sit over.

Bring also some biscuits or your own sake. Green tea will be offered by Paüls mayor.

It is also requested to all participants to prepare a small poem (of your own or any other author who must be referenced), song or small text about one of the following topics to be read in public:

- Cherry blossom
- Spring arrival
- Natural beauty of Terres de l'Ebre
- Japanese culture (Before WWII)
- Relations between Terres de l'Ebre or Catalunya with Japan

Finally, please have in mind that the area is located in a narrow valley so there's no plenty of room to park the cars. If possible park your car in Paüls and get into another car with empty seats heading to the same place.

Our ancestors the iberians

In chic and expensive Ile Saint Louis, in Paris (France), there's a restaurant called "Nos ancetres les gaulois". It's a different concept of french restaurant where you can eat wild boars and drink wine in horns like Asterix and their friends but paying then a bill like a XXIst century parisian.

Its location, in one of the most romantic and special places at the heart of french capital might show how the french love everything related to their history prior the arrival of the Roman Empire.

Quite surprisingly, another proud mediterranean people, the Spanish and the Catalans, do not know so well their preroman history. Maybe this is because we didn't have an Asterix comic, maybe it's because Julius Caesar did not write so much on his war in Hispania as he did in his war in Gaul (Current France).

The fact is that most spaniards, catalans and inhabitants of Terres de l'Ebre when asked what do they know about iberian culture all what they might answer you just that there's a statue called "Dama d'Elx" and, if lucky, they could even point you out the location of any settlement like Ullastret in Empordà area or castellet de Banyoles in Tivissa (Ribera d'Ebre).

Very few know that the well settled tradition of "Bou Embolat" may have its origins when 2500 years ago, as the carthagians leaded by Amilcar landed in current Alacant and Santa Pola area (Southern Valencian country), the iberian tribe of Elx received them attacking with a bull with fire in their horns.

The mighty carthagians fleed for the first occasion scared by the brave animal who seemed to came directly from hell but at their second try they knew what was happening and they were not so scared.

During first weekend of october the inhabitants of Terres de l'Ebre have the chance to approach themselves to Iberian traditions and cultures in the four iberian archeological settlements in Terres de l'Ebre, Alcanar, Vinebre, Tivissa and Gandesa. There will be guided tours, gastronomy, iberian crafrt markets and you can even learn how to write using the iberian alphabet.

And in Alcanar activities already start this weekend with the iberian market.

Reto para Rajoy

Este mensaje va dirigido a los organizadores de la campaña electoral de Mariano Rajoy.

Quedan 5 días hábiles hasta el final de la campaña electoral por las elecciones del 9 de marzo.

Les reto a que antes del viernes a medianoche Mariano Rajoy se presente en Tortosa, no hace falta que sea para dar un miting político, basta que vaya a cualquier sala de prensa y diga las palabras "mágicas" que ayer dijo en Zaragoza:

".....el agua que sobre, la que se tire al mar..."

Con ello se hacen un tremendo favor en dos sentidos

1) Demostrando que el mensaje del PP es efectivamente el mismo en todo lo que ustedes denominan "territorio nacional"

2) Recuperaran, tal vez, el voto perdido por el PP en esta parte de Cataluña, hasta finales de los 90 su principal bastión político (Donde incluso vino Jose María Aznar en 1995) y donde desde entonces no se ha visto ni un solo máximo dirigente popular a la vez que el voto a la vez que se experimentaba una caida drástica en el número de votos.

Le jour que les "ebrencs" iront au ciel

Ebrencs=Habitants de la region de l'Ebre au sud de la Catalogne.

À la petite ville d'Amalfi, au sud de l'Itale, pres de Naples, il y a un affiche fait avec des faiances où on peut y lire en italien "Le jour que les amalfiatains iront au ciel pour eux, ce jour là, sera un jour comme tous les autres".

Effectivement, la cote amalfitaine est un petit coin de paradis, avec ses villages mediterraneens qui regardent le "Mare Nostrum" avec des citroniers et des chataigniers qui entourent la ville.

Laissez-moi vous dire une chose, il n'y a que les amalfitains qui beneficient de ce privilège au sud de l'Europe.

Chez nous, au sud de la Catalogne, nous disposons de grandes montaignes avec des fontaines et des chevres sauvages, un grand espace humede avec plein d'oiseaux, les bouches de l'Ebre, des petits villages calmes qui se reflexent dans ses eaux comme Miravet, des orangiers et des aumondiers partout, des villages maritimes comme l'Ampolla ou l'Ametlla de Mar ou les pecheurs s'occupent de ses affaires de la même manière que ses ancetres l'ont fait il y a plus de 1000 ans. Et si tout ça ne suffit pas, on dispose aussi d'une region interieure qui a charmé des artistes de taille mondiale comme Pablo Picasso au même temps qu'on produit un vin rouge fort et de caractère aussi que notre celebre vin doux, la "mistela".

La seule difference avec Amalfi?? Les americains n'y ont pas débarqué aux années 50....

Parce que, croyez-moi, nous nous avons vraiment gagné le droit de vivre au ciel, suffit de lire les declarations de certains politiques de Barcelone qui affirment avoir negocié amener l'eau du Roine au Barcelone.....pour que après les dirigeants politiques français viennent affirmer le contraire....

and finally today Kosovo has split from the last remain of the "Great Serbia"

Only one country has decided to join another country, the RDA joined the RFA creating what today we know as "Germany".

No one of this 19 nations is located in western Europe, no one of them was already included into the European Union at the time of his birth.

So as there's no model for us Catalonia will have to continue to walk in its own way, very few catalans could understand our parliament takes a similar decission without a referendum or without assuring to keep our current level of prosperity, in any case the independence would have to lead to better (and inmediatal) economocial prosperity, not less.

What cannot be understood is the reasons for which the main political parties in Spain do not want to recognize the independence of Kosovo. Do they fear to loose support as the elections approach? Why do the UK would support the cause and not Spain?

James I the conqueror, the only king catalans love

800 years ago, the 31st of january 1207 the future king James I of Catalonia and Aragon was born in Montpellier, today France.

His importance in Catalan history is very high as he was the king that, once an adult, conquered the kingdom of Valencia and the island of Mallorca to the moors, spreading christendom, catalan law system and, the most important, the catalan language, in today's "Països catalans" (Catalan countries).

What he did cannot be denied, even by valencian and balearic unionist forces (in favour of keeping valencian and balearic affairs and dialect away from Barcelona's and Catalonia's decissions).

Today some acts are being carried out in symbolical places related to him, like Valencia, Mallorca, Perpinyà and even his birthplace, Montpellier.

He is buried currently in Poblet Monastery, near Tarragona, with the other kings of the catalan-aragonese dinasty that came after him.

No other king is remembered by the catalans who love their country so emotively as he is. The years that came after his death were the greatest in catalan history with the expansion to the east carrying the catalan flag up to the walls of Constantinople (Today's Istanbul in Turkey).

When king Martí l'humà died with no heir in 1410 the catalan court started to hispanize and catalan relationship with monarchy started to deteriorate up until our days with the Borbon dinasty.

¿Vegue qué? (I)

Empiezo hoy una serie fija en mi blog con el objetivo de explicar a la ciudadanía española las razones por la cuales en Catalunya estamos redifiniendo nuestro modelo territorial.

Soy consciente de que no es un tema que preocupe mucho ni a la sociedad ni a la prensa española, para eso están las comunidades autónomas al fin y al cabo para que cada uno dentro de su casa se guise y se cocine sus asuntos a su manera, incluido su mapa territorial interno.

Partiendo de aquí sabemos por ejemplo que ciertas CCAA, como por ejemplo Aragón, se han comarcalizado.

El problema se plantea cuando Cataluña, en su redefinición territorial interna, pretende ir más allá y redibujar a la vez el mapa provincial o simplemente borrarlo, llevándose por delante instituciones de carácter estatal como las subdelegaciones del gobierno y las diputaciones.

Ninguna Comunidad Autónoma ha planteado nada así hasta el momento, ni siquiera Euskadi, perfectamente satisfecha con su mapa foral que refleja su realidad histórica y nacional. Y si alguna Comunidad Autónoma no insular ha suprimido sus diputaciones ha sido con la finalidad de integrarlas en los órganos de gobierno y gestión de la Comunidad Autónoma al ser esta uniprovincial como es el caso de la Rioja o de Asturias por ejemplo.

¿Por qué la Generalitat pretender llegar hasta tal extremo? Lo mostraré en próximas entradas en este mismo blog.

Les marocains de Tortosa

Mon premier en post en français va addressé aux marocains francophones qui puissent arriver à trouver mon blog.

Tortosa est une ville catalane qui se trouve à 180 km au sud de Barcelone et 190 km au nord de Valence, elle se situe aux rives du fleuve Ebre.

Actuellement le 27% des residants à Tortosa sont nés en déhors de l’Espagne, les marocains constituient eux seuls le 7,42% des residants à Tortosa, bien en distance des roumanais et des originaires du Pakistan.

Si bien les marocains se trouvent repartis dans toute la ville la plupart d’entre eux reside au quartier ancien de la ville autour de la Plaça Montserrat, connue par tous comme « Plaça dels farols ».

Dans ce quartier là on peut y trouver quelques boucheries « halal », des boutiques gerés par des marocains, des teleboutiques (qui vont bientôt etre regulés par la mairie afin d’eviter sa concentration excessive) et un oratoire.

Si bien la communauté musulmane et marocaine a demandé à plusieurs fois un endroit pour y construire une mosquée la mairie s’y est opposé car l’Espagne est un pays aconfessionel où les pouvoirs publiques ne peuvent pas faciliter des fonds publiques à des finalités religieuses. Néanmoins la mairie facilite un endroit specialle pour la concentration et prière pendant le mois du Ramadan.

Les marocains de Tortosa sont, dans sa plupart, jeunes et hommes, et ils travaillent dans la construction et l’agriculture. Ils viennent dans la plupart de la zone nord du Maroc (Larache, Tetouan, Al Hoceima, Nador, Oujda, etc...) Ils rarement arrivent à s’integrer avec la population locale et pourtant ils arrivent à comprendre et parler la langue du pays, le catalan, plus facillement que des autres communautés d’immigrés comme les pakistanais ou les sud-americains.

Ses familles n’arrivent pour les joindre que des qu’ils ont déjà vecu en Espagne pendant un certain periode de temps, dans sa plupart les femmes marocaines qui viennent sont voilés et s’habillent avec des djelabas.

Le grand défi de la Tortosa du démain est eviter une segregation sociale et geographique trop forte entre marocains et tortosins de tradition chrétienne pour eviter les problèmes sociaux que des autres pays européens, notamment la France, vivent actuellement.

Je serais très interessé pour trouver des portraits sociales des ommmunautés marocaines ou maghrebines dans des autres villes de la Catalogne ou l’Europe.

The reasons to write

Hello everybody.

My name is Jordi Arrufat, I'm from a medium sized town called Tortosa located in southern Catalonia and the Center of the Catalan Countries (Països Catalans) in what most of you would call North East Spain or Spanish Eastern Mediterranean Coast.

My native language is catalan, and catalan is the language which I have used in my last blog about my experience living and working in Northern Africa and in my current blog about globalization, catalan independentism and current social and political events in Tortosa and its surrounding area, the Ebre Land (in catalan "Terres de l'Ebre").

However, as the impact of globalization grows constantly day after day and the forecasted Spanish General Elections approach (Next March the 9th) I felt the need to let the world know what my land is and what do we want to be and what we certainly do NOT want to be. And this means to write in other languages than catalan.

As a Spanish citizen (or at least that's what my passport says) I'm fluent in Spanish and I will use this language to let people know from non-catalan speaking territories of Spain, why do we some catalans wish to create a separate state as most of the times the Catalan separatist ideas are written only in Catalan and then they are translated, or even worse, interpreted, by some parcial commentators who modify the original ideas we wanted to communicate.
An independent Catalonia, even if included as the 26th member of the European Union, could not be understood without Spanish support. So even if today most of the Spanish society doesn't support the idea to see its country split I'm convinced that if we reach independence by pacific and democratic ways we could find then (and only then) some way or other to pact with Spain. But the way must start to be paved today opening channels of discussion, debate and communication. And that's what my blog mainly pretends, to open debate positive-built debate.

As a former student in France thanks to Erasmus program and former resident in Algeria and Morocco I can also communicate quite well in French. France is, with no doubt, the second most important neighbour Catalonia has after Spain. The liberal ideas much more present today in Catalonia that in the rest of Spain arrived from France in the XIX century, as the Industrial Revolution did. And it was in France where most of the catalan elite fled after the Spanish Civil War to avoid death or prison. A litlle portion of my nation is included in France, in today's "Department 66" or what we catalans call "Rosselló". An independen catalan nation could not walk in the current world without French support that's why I will also intent to write some of my posts in French.

Then there's English, the language I'm using in this post. No need to say how important it's to have a good command of English in today's world (Even if quite surely tomorrow's world might be lead by Chinese language). With English I know I can be read and understood from California to Japan via London, Cape Town, Moscow, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Dubai, Teheran and Hong Kong. What our cause lacks at communication level is that we are not a English speaking nation as Scotland or located in a English speaking country as Quebec in Canada.

Finally I will use the three mentioned languages to talk you about my homeland, the Ebre Land, which I love so much and it's unfairly unknown despite our rich history, our diversified landscape and our central position between Barcelona and Valencia. Because the Ebre Land cannot be understood to the Ebre river (Ebro in Spanish) I want you to make you know wich are the current challenges our land must face being placed in a dry part of the world as the Iberian Peninsula is.

The importance Catalan Language has for us, native catalan speakers, resides in the fact that we can see that in the current world some languages grow in importance we see how minority languages decrease in their social use being replaced by major world languages (call it English, Chinese, Russian, French, Arabic or Spanish to mention a few). Catalan has luck enough to be the most used and spoken European Minor Language and its even the only official language in tiny Andorra. But this is not enough to survive, everywhere in the world we see how minor languages tend to be forgotten or let apart as major languages are more "useful".
This is not even enough for Popes in Vatican who dismiss our language at the Cristhmas blessing or for the European Union which considers our language, spoken by around 6 milion people, less important than Maltese or Irish Gaelic.

That's why I will keep writing my other blog in Catalan, because it's the language in which I dream, I love and I think and I want future generations to continue to do so but that's also at the same time the reason for which I do pretend to keep this new blog alive. I want to hear your comments and heat up the debate.
